Insulation Between Rafters

Wall build-up 2: Insulation with reed insulation panels between the rafters (also suitable for new buildings)

Existence:
e.g. rafters (8 x 16 cm). General Requirements:
EnEV: U-value: 0.30 W/(m²K) (Exception: In the case of a refitting of an insulation between the rafters where the height of the rafters does not allow for a sufficient insulation.)
DIN 4108 : R ≥ 1.20 (m²K)/W. No calculation of condensate is necessary if the conditions of DIN 4108-3: 4.3.3.2 (non-ventilated roofs) are met. Insulation between the rafters:
20 mm bituminised roof board (e.g. Pavatex) on the rafters, 2 x 80 mm of Hiss Reet panels extra between the rafters, 20 mm Hiss Reet panels below the rafters, loam rendering.
U-value: 0.28 W/(m²K). Details on the Use and Application of Reed Insulation Panels as Insulation Between the Rafters:
  1. Attach a bituminised roof board on the rafters by screwing or with a staple gun.
  2. Cut the reed insulation panels to size (d = 80 mm) according to the rafter spacing. Then clamp the first layer between the rafters. It is advisable, if statically possible, to have the same rafter spacing throughout. 1 m would be an optimal spacing as there are panels of this size available which could be used without prior cutting to size.
  3. Clamp the second layer of reed panels (d = 80 mm or less, depending on the thickness of the rafters) between the rafters. If possible the second layer should be placed staggered to the preceding layer.
  4. Fix the reed insulation panel (d = 20 mm) as plaster base with screws and insulation discs. If possible the screws should be attached to the rafters.
  5. Apply a loam rendering of 2-3 layers.
All over the clay a jute cloth should be applied.
  6. Wall heating: If an additional wall heating is fitted the heating pipes or coils can be attached directly to the wire of the reed panels by means of tie wraps. A horizontal chase, containing inlet and outlet pipe, can be installed at the base point of the roof.
